When
LaSalle discovered the Fox River he christened it Pestekouy, the
French word for Buffalo. He gave accounts of Buffalo and Deer
grazing along the riverbanks. Beaver, Muskrat, and other aquatic
animals were also in abundance.
The
Fox River runs uninterrupted by dams from Yorkville to Wedron, a
distance of 25 miles. The
river is shallow throughout and this makes it great for the inexperienced
canoer. The Fox is a Class 1 river, which means there are no dangerous
currents.
Besides
being beautiful and safe, the Fox River is also historic. Many battles
between American settlers and Indians were fought along its banks.
Marameck, a large settlement of Fox Indians, was the site of the
massacre of 300 of their tribe by the French and their Indian allies.
In honor of these Indians the Pestekouy was renamed the Fox.
In
recent years the quality of the Fox River has greatly improved.
Residents, canoe haulers, and canoeing clubs have all been active
to achieve this improving condition. C & M Canoe Rental appreciates
these efforts and expect others to be environmentally friendly.
Please keep all garbage with you throughout your trip and dispose
of it at an appropriate location.
